Valentine’s Day Special: Wealthy Donors Gush Over the #GOPTaxScam, and Republicans Cash In

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democracy Reform Task Force released an update today that shows how Republicans in Congress are raking in campaign donations and political support from wealthy and well-connected campaign donors who are personally benefitting from the GOP Tax Scam that passed Congress in late 2017.

The update, “Republicans Cash In on the #GOPTaxScam,” shows that after giving their wealthy donors billions of dollars in tax cuts, Republicans are being rewarded with large campaign contributions and strong political support. It bookends a Task Force mini-report released in December 2017 that featured Republicans openly admitting that pleasing their donors was the driving motivation behind forcing their tax bill through Congress.

“When you look at the sequencing of things – how big money donors are sending in their contributions as soon as the tax legislation is crossing the finish line – it’s what you call payment on delivery,” said Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.). “Wealthy Republican donors are relishing the billions of dollars in giveaways, carveouts and loopholes they received from GOP Tax Scam. And in return, wealthy donor are rewarding Republicans in Congress with millions of dollars in campaign donations, along with support from Super PACs and other outside groups. This is exactly the kind of special-interest backroom deal making that’s corroding our democracy and putting the priorities of the privileged and powerful ahead of the needs of hardworking Americans.”
