WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement today after all Democratic Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform sent a letter to Chairman Trey Gowdy, asking him to issue a subpoena to compel the Department of Homeland Security to produce documents it has been withholding from Congress about Russian cyberattacks on at least 21 state election systems in 2016:

“With only 10 months until the 2018 elections, we’re running out of time to figure out how to fix the vulnerabilities that exist within our state elections systems. The Trump Administration is withholding crucial information from Congress about how state-sponsored Russian hackers attacked 21 state election systems in 2016. Without this information, we will be limited in our efforts to advance best practices and reforms to better protect our election systems in 2018 and beyond. The integrity of our democracy is at stake. We must do everything we can to shore up our cyber defenses and protect the American democratic process.”
