Sarbanes Statement on Trump Voting Commission

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after President Donald Trump announced the creation of a commission to investigate voter fraud and suppression:

“President Trump’s so-called ‘voter integrity commission’ is a sham – plain and simple. The commission is intended to keep fueling the president’s unfounded allegations of systemic voter fraud. It’s also intended to distract the American people from the controversy currently consuming the White House. If President Trump was serious about improving the integrity of the ballot box, he’d work with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to expand access and participation in our democracy.

“For months, President Trump has stood by his patently false claim that ‘millions of people’ voted ‘illegally’ in the 2016 election. This commission is just one more attempt to breathe life into that dying and dangerous lie.”
