WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today on the resignation of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt.

“Scott Pruitt’s resignation was long overdue. While his petty grift, barefaced corruption and abuse of public office led to his resignation, Pruitt’s anti-environmental tenure at the EPA also served as grounds for his removal. Unfortunately, under the new acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler – a former lobbyist for the coal industry – the EPA will likely pursue the same pro-polluter policies that endanger our environment and threaten public health.

“Even after Pruitt’s resignation, many other Trump Administration officials – from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to the President himself – continue to use public office for private gain, at the expense of hardworking Americans. If President Trump cares at all about draining the swamp in Washington, he should start by cleaning up his cabinet and taking note of his own behavior in public office.”
