WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) released the following statement today after 21 leading environmental organizations endorsed H.R. 1, the For the People Act:

“I’m proud to team up with leading environmental organizations across the country to clean up the culture of corruption in Washington and return to government of, by and for the people. Time and time again, vital action on climate change gets blocked by the entrenched and well-funded interests of the oil and gas industry. At the same time, these wealthy and well-connected polluters continue to chip away at critical protections that keep our water safe to drink and our air safe to breathe.

“The environmental community knows that in order to take swift and meaningful action on climate change and to protect the natural world for future generations, we need to clean up Washington first. By ending the dominance of dirty fossil fuel money in our politics, strengthening ethics and accountability across all three branches of government and making it easier – not harder – to vote, we can make bold progress on the environmental priorities that most Americans want to see.

“With H.R. 1, swift action by the Energy & Commerce Committee and the creation of a Select Committee on the Climate Crisis – which has been spurred by strong advocacy for a Green New Deal – my House Democratic colleagues and I will take important steps toward a new green economy and press forward with transformative climate change solutions.”
