WASHINGTON, D.C. – During a Subcommittee on National Security hearing today, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) warned against the coming attacks on our elections by foreign adversaries and urged Republican lawmakers to join Democrats in hardening American election security before 2020.

“Our intelligence community is obviously warning us that we’re going to be attacked again,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “The red lights are blinking. The alarm bells are going off. We’re under attack. It’s clear to everybody.”

Sarbanes continued: “When we passed here the For the People Act in the House, House Democrats essentially introduced a comprehensive set of election security reforms that would protect the ballot box, that would stymie disinformation campaigns, close loopholes that allow foreign governments to intrude into our democracy. Title III of H.R. 1 was just re-introduced by Democrats as a standalone bill that would address all of these important issues and provide states and local governments with the resources … necessary to make sure that we’re ready for 2020.”

Sarbanes concluded: “We encourage and ask our friends across the aisle to join us in this effort. This is about American patriots, not Republicans or Democrats, fighting back against these attacks on our democracy.”
