Sarbanes Calls on Oversight Committee to Subpoena and Publicly Release Trump’s Tax Returns

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During an Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing today on government transparency, Democracy Reform Task Force Chair Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.) called on Republican leaders to request and make public President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

“Seventy to eighty percent of Americans would like to see those tax returns,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “And they want to see them because they just want their anxieties to be addressed. I think people are worrying that there may be some divided loyalty here, that the president isn’t putting his responsibilities and the public trust that goes with the Office of the Presidency ahead of these other business concerns. Maybe he is, but without getting the information there’s no way we can know that. And I think that’s why the public is expressing this degree of anxiety and saying, ‘Look, just come clean. Let us just see, as all other presidents have done, what’s in your tax returns.’”
